The superb catalogue of an international travelling exhibition ”Industrial Tiles 1840-1940”, a co-operative venture between four organisations in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK. The aim of the exhibition was to draw attention to the rich diversity of industrial tiles made in England, Germany, Belgium, France and The Netherlands. Although industrial tiles were mass-produced they nevertheless reveal a fascinating range of production techniques, styles, and subject matter, becoming an important functional and decorative element in nineteenth and twentieth century architecture. Fortunately much of this tile heritage can still be seen in its original location today. Fabulous tiles of the Victorian and Edwardian eras are reproduced in this catalogue which should be on every tile collector’s bookshelf!

This book contains details of the life and work of George Cartlidge, the North Staffordshire artist, potter and designer, who is best known for his portrait tiles of leading dignitaries in the early years of the last century and his Morris Ware range of Art Pottery designed for Sampson Hancock & Sons. Included in the book are reproductions of an 1892 Tile Catalogue of the Sherwin & Cotton Company together with several plates from that Company's book “Tiles for Interior Decoration”. Details of the modelling and production of the portrait and picture tiles are included as well as eye witness accounts of the process. Later chapters cover details of his efforts to establish an American company to produce the Tiles, the production of the portrait tiles by J.H. Barratt & Co. and the Art pottery he made in his studio in Rudyard, Staffordshire. The book also has illustrations of many of the Morris Ware designs George did for Sampson Hancock & Sons, the first comprehensive record of this magnificent range of Art Pottery. This is a superb book that deserves to be on every tile enthusiast’s bookshelf!

manufacturer, Johann von Schwarz are here documented for the first time. 548 objects (mainly tiles and plaques) are displayed in superb colour and 1187 known designs are listed in a Registry of Works.
The name of their designer, Carl Sigmund Luber has been known for some time, but the details of his life and work have not been revealed until now. A chance encounter with his grand-children has led to a re-discovery of his work and influence as a unique artistic personality of the Art Nouveau movement.
