Monographs on a single tile designer are few and far between, but this superb catalogue raisonné of the tiles of 20th century Portuguese designer Eduardo Nery is an outstanding example. Approaching his work from various directions, the author has managed to capture the spirit of Nery and his sometimes disturbing work. All facets of his designs are represented here, from bold, colourful geometric patterns, through to the ‘disassembled’ patterns based on conventional Portuguese ‘welcome figures’ and his later work which in naturalistic, yet disturbing style. Wonderful!

It is particularly interesting as it includes rarely seen tiles from Havana and other Latin American countries. The illustrations are superb and benefit from the very large format of the book, which enables the tiles to speak for themselves. Another excellent book from Ars Latina!

Some years ago, the Associació Catalana de Ceràmica published an article that sought to categorise the patterns appearing on Catalan tiles of the 16th - 19th c. This reprint of the article now has the illustrations in colour for the first time. A very useful book for identifying Catalan tiles.
