This was to be the final work of Niki de Saint Phalle before her death last year. The interior of the Grotto of the Herrenhausen Gardens in Germany, was originally covered in shells, crystals, glass and minerals, but had been destroyed during the 18th century. Insufficient evidence remained to be able to reconstruct the interior as it had been, so Niki was commissioned to design an ultra-modern interior in mosaic and relief, for the newly restored building. Sadly she didn’t live to see the finished work, but this superb volume will bring her art to a wider public.
