Chris Blanchett, Schiffer Books, USA, 2006, 832pp, 3382 colour illustrations, 215 x 280mm, cloth, dustwrappers.
Since the middle ages there has been a strong tradition for the use of decorative tiles in Britain; from the early inlaid or encaustic tiles used in 13th century cathedrals and abbeys, via English delftware tiles of the 17th and 18th centuries and the mass produced tiles of the Victorian era, right up to the diverse industry of the present day. Much of this has been documented and analysed although 20th century production has been sadly neglected – until now. This new series of three volumes seeks to redress the balance by describing Art Nouveau, Art Deco and modern tile manufacture and design in great detail.

The work is divided into two sections: the first two volumes covering large and medium scale commercial manufacturers, many of whom have operated throughout the 20th century, and a third volume considering the smaller craft and studio tile making firms whose work is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest. Each manufacturer has an entry listing company name(s), addresses and dates, a short history of the business and a description of the type and style of tiles made, accompanied by a selection of products illustrating production in more or less chronological order. A useful section on marks and identification is also included for each manufacturer together with a list of resources for further study. A very detailed glossary of technical terms is included as well as an index and bibliography.

The author, Chris Blanchett, has been well known in tile circles for many years and has drawn on his personal collection of over 6500 tiles for the superb colour illustrations. These have been supplemented where necessary with illustrations from other tile collections at home and abroad as well as photographs from many of the makers involved. The result is a book that illustrates the rich cultural heritage of tile design in Britain and reflects a promising future for British tile design and manufacture.
